The Zhangs CNY Celebration

Gardens By The Bay

Together Again, Exactly As They Are

Some families plan their poses.

The Zhangs plan nothing and somehow everything works. This was one of those rare Chinese New Year seasons where everyone was back together in Singapore.

So they chose Gardens by the Bay, gathering beneath the glass ceilings of the Flower Dome, surrounded by olive and mandarin trees with swaying red lanterns, simply to stand side by side again.

But they cannot stay serious for long. Grandpa with finger guns. Grandma mid-laughter. Cousins popping their heads over vine-covered railings. A composed portrait dissolving seconds later.

They did not want stiff. They wanted honest. White shirts. Denim. Red packets in hand. Coordinated, but free enough to move, tease and laugh without worrying about the camera.

Because what mattered was not perfection. It was reunion. And sometimes, that is the rarest celebration of all.
